Referrals in business are as valuable as the bottom line in the books.

Have you ever played chess? Those who have, know that the good players aggressively move their pieces down the board, forcing their strategic will against their opponent. Effective at times, it inevitably falls short.

“What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?”

Chess, ultimately is won by the great players. Great players place their pieces, not from an aggressive perspective, saturating the market with their product or service, but instead positioning themselves where they know they aren’t vulnerable and will be able to capitalize even on the slightest of odds.

If growing your clientele is the chess board, then positive referrals are the pieces that make it.

The Reality

Here at eXpect3, we speak to clients all the time, and regardless of what their industry is the answer is the same: 80% of their business comes from referrals. What does this mean? It means that 80% of their business is built off a perceived reality. Their prospective clients walk through the door on the prodding and urging of another’s word.

This can be a concerning reality for many business owners. You can position all the right ads, images, and headlines, but that only accounts for the 20% of business. The key to a successful marketing plan, as daunting and unpredictable as it might seem, is birthed out of the nature of reviews and referrals.

So What Can I Do?

You have to get good referrals. The answer is easier said than done. Referral-based marketing is a full-time job within itself but can be easy to understand and attainable if you take a simple three-tiered approach to it. These are the avenues we look at when we are helping our clients with their online image:

  • Google Reviews – before anyone buys anything online or makes a decision to go with you or a competitor, they google you. They look at your reviews. What are similar clients saying about what you did for them?
  • Facebook Reviews – It’s the “phonebook of the digital age” and everyone is connected to everybody. And just like a locker room or a church foyer, people are constantly talking. What are they saying about you?
  • Email Marketing – This is definitely the most proactive of the steps because it can be so effective. It’s simply asking satisfied clients to leave a review for you on Facebook, Google, or any other directory.
